INFORMATION
ABOUT
SED
Springfield
Electric Department is a locally owned municipal electric
system, which provides electric service to customers within
the Springfield City limits. There are approximately 6,100
residential and 1,300 commercial and industrial electric customers
currently served by Springfield Electric. Annual revenue from
electric sales exceeds $16.2 million. Total power cost is
approximately $13.7 million. In August 2003 Springfield Electric
set an all-time peak electric demand of 58,675 kilowatts,
and total energy consumption was 29,793,296 kilowatt-hours.
Springfield Electric Department's electric rates are currently
among the lowest in middle Tennessee. The Electric Department
is currently debt-free.

SYSTEM
IMPROVEMENTS
Among
the most significant system improvements planned for the coming
year:
- Industrial
line reconductor project: We are ordering wire, poles, insulators,
and other material needed to reconduct Circuit 9224 between
Wartrace Substation and District Substation. Upgrading this
line to 795 MCM conductor will enable us to serve all industrial
customers on Industrial Drive from a single breaker at Wartrace
or District Substation. This will provide tremendous flexibility
during load switching operations.
- SED
has purchased land for a new substation in the area of the
new W.A. Batson Parkway. This substation will meet anticipated
loads in the Hwy 431 South corridor to the Springfield city
limits. We plan to begin construction in 2005.
OPERATIONS
& MAINTENANCE
Mt.
Denson substation in the North Industrial Park was re-energized
August 7th. The substation was severely damaged from a tornado
on May 5, 2003. Groves construction of Madisonville, KY performed
most of the repair work. The substation was off-line a total
of 124 days.
SED
completed replacement of the three 26-year-old 15 kV circuit
breakers at our Sleepy Hollow Substation. The new breakers
are more responsive and reliable, and are equipped with electronic
relays which provide useful detailed information on currents,
voltages and operation history.
OFFICE
& SITE RENOVATIONS
As
part of an effort to serve the needs of our customers, Springfield
Electric has renovated its Central Avenue office to create
a more "customer friendly" environment. We created
a larger customer service office and centralized the most
common services offered into this office. This includes security
light applications, underground service applications, service
complaints, and daytime dispatching. The engineering office
has also been expanded to accommodate the needs of a growing
system.
In
1999, SED purchased a half-acre tract of land next door to
accommodate the growing truck fleet, and equipment and material
inventory. A new pole storage rack was constructed on this
lot, which freed space on the east side to construct two new
truck storage sheds, which were completed in 2000 and 2003.
The department is much better suited to handle the expected
growth of the system for several years to come.
